Threatened Amphibians in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Threatened Amphibians of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: One of Uganda’s most well-known and often visited national parks is Bwindi, which is situated in the southwest of the country. The national park was gazetted in 1991 and currently has a total area of 331 square kilometers. Ten primates, 120 animals, 350 bird species, 51 reptiles, 27 amphibians, and 160 tree species are among the various wildlife species found in the park.
Eleven of the approximately 27 amphibians found in Bwindi are native to the Albertine rift. Small, cold-blooded vertebrates, amphibians can only live in environments with water. Frogs, salamanders, and other amphibians can be found in Bwindi’s several water sources, including Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Rushaga.

The majority of amphibians in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park are found near water sources, such as rivers and waterfalls. The park’s Munyaga waterfalls, Munyaga River, River Ishasha, River Ihihizo, River Ivi, and River Ntengyere are all home to frogs in Bwindi. In Bwindi, amphibians are observed consuming spiders, other frogs, insects, snails, slugs, and smaller birds.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi
Although it is possible to visit Bwindi at any time of year, the dry season is the most suitable. This occurs from June to September and December to February. During these months, there is little to no rainfall, which keeps the hiking paths dry, the foliage is sparse and short, providing good views of the animals, and the park’s roads are usable.
During the rainy season, travelers, especially those on a tight budget, might visit Bwindi to take advantage of the significant savings on lodging options. The excessive rainfall during the rainy months causes the roads leading to the park to be impassable; the foliage is dense and tall, making it difficult to see the park’s features; and the trekking paths become muddy and slick.
Getting to Bwindi
Bwindi is located in southwest Uganda and may be reached from Kigali in 4 – 5 hours via the Cyanika border in Kisoro or the Katuna border in Kabale. Road transit still makes it possible to go from Kampala to Kabale, Kisoro, or Kanungu in nine to ten hours. By flying from Kajjansi Airport or Entebbe International Airport to Kihihi or Kisoro Airports, visitors can quickly reach the park.
